Roxbury, Mass. – Under the direction of Roxbury Community College (RCC) Interim President Jackie Jenkins-Scott, RCC has created A Blueprint for the Future: The Pathway Forward Committee to conduct a comprehensive review of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center (RLTAC) and make recommendations.
“The Reggie is an important fixture in our community,” says Jenkins-Scott. “As we approach the Center’s 30th anniversary, now is the time to chart a path for a strong and vibrant future.” The panel will create a plan for a sustained high performing operation that meets the growing needs of the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA), RCC, and the community at large. It will submit an initial report by June 30, 2022, and complete its work at the end of September.
Charlie Titus, Retired Vice Chancellor for Athletics, Recreation and Special Programs for the University of Massachusetts Boston will lead the committee. Committee members include Donna Harris-Lewis, Purpose Driven Non-Profit Board Leader, Organizational Development, COE; Linda Rowbotham, President of the MSTCA; Matt Carr, Director of Meet Operations/Indoor Track MSTCA; Brandy Cruthird, director of Strategic Partnerships at Madison Park High School; Albert Hale, Athletic Director at RCC; Dave Hoffman, Senior Vice President of Community Engagement at the Boston Celtics; Haven Ladd, principal at EY Parthenon; Mike Rubin, retired BPS headmaster and former EBHS basketball coach; and Vaughn Williams, Athletic Director at Bentley University.
The RLTAC was established in 1995 by legislative mandate. Since the Center opened, the facility has hosted high school, MSTCA, and national track meets, including the US Track and Field Championships and the National High School Championships. Over the years the RTLAC has served as a gathering place for community events including RCC’s graduation ceremonies, job fairs, and events for local seniors.
For nearly two years the Center was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the facility‘s building systems were assessed, and some repairs were made, to reopen as a COVID-19 vaccination site. The RTLAC was used to administer more than 164,000 COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic. A gradual reopening of the RLTAC is underway, with space at the Center currently available for public and private events. RCC students, faculty and staff can begin using the Center on April 25, 2022, with external memberships available beginning June 1, 2022.
